Description

1 yanagi gori (basket trunk) : bamboo ; top 25 x 14 x 10.25 in., bottom 24 x 13 x 9.75 in.

Bamboo yanagi gori or kori basket is composed of top and bottom pieces woven in diagonal pattern with edges wrapped vertically to form a 1 in. lip. The top basket fits completely over the bottom basket. Corners are rounded; bottom basket corners are worn with two large holes; top basket corners have holes and are reinforced with light brown cotton fabric across 2 short ends.

Written in black ink on bottom basket (In Japanese):Tazawa Haruno. Written in black ink on bottom basket: Yokohama. Written in black ink on top basket (In Japanese):Tazawa Haruno. Written in black ink on top basket next to Japanese name: Yokohama.

History
Mrs. Haruno Tazawa brought this yanagi gori with her to Hawaii in 1917 as a picture bride from Fukushima, Japan.
