The Rafu Shimpo's December holiday supplement cover was a composite created by Archie Miyatake using a photograph of Senator Daniel K. Inouye presenting the American flag with 50 stars at a White House ceremony in Washington, D.C. held in August 1959, and a photograph of Senator Hiram Fong in Hawaii from the office of Hawaii Governor William F. Quinn through press secretary Larry Nakatsuka. The cover shows Inouye at left holding the edge of the American flag and Fong standing at left, covering Caucasian man. The issue was dedicated to "Hawaii statehood".
