Calendar of Events — November 2005

All programs are free for Museum members and free with admission for non-members, unless otherwise noted. Events are subject to change.

Advanced reservations are recommended for most programs as space may be limited. When making a reservation, e-mail rsvp@janm.org or call 213.625.0414 at least 48 hours prior to the event. Include the name, date, and time of the program, as well as your name and the total in your party. Some programs may have separate reservation contacts. Please check program description.

Film Screening and Book Signing of Projects Celebrating Seiichi Tanaka

Two projects explore the contributions of master drummer Seiichi Tanaka, founder and the director of the renowned San Francisco Taiko Dojo.

The Way of Taiko written by Heidi Varian and Gayle Yamada's documentary, The Spirit of Taiko, are musts for anyone fascinated by the power of taiko as experienced by one of its leading practitioners.

A Conversation with Ceramicist Jun Kaneko

The third of three conversations focusing on significant Japanese American artists who work with clay features Jun Kaneko.

Kaneko began his career as a painter, becoming a sculptor when he arrived in the U.S. from Japan in the 1960s. His work can be seen in the public collections of the Shigaraki Ceramic Museum in Japan; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Detroit Institute of Art; and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, among others. In March 2006, Opera Omaha will premiere a new production of Madama Butterfly with sets and costumes designed by Kaneko.

Explore the diverse and wonderful world of drums with Chris Reid, master percussionist and founder of Bang-A-Drum. Kids will use instruments and learn songs from all corners of the globe. Instruments provided. $8 for National Museum members; $12 for non-members. Space is limited.
