Awaken the Senses/Awaken the Writer

events/2007-10-06_paula.jpg

A Two-part Writing Workshop with Paula Panich
What happens when you allow your senses to guide you? Let Paula Panich, journalist and author of Cultivating Words: The Guide to Writing about the Plants and Gardens You Love, awaken your inner writer by helping you find new ways of expressing what/how you see, smell, and touch. Writings focus on the seiryu-en or the Garden of the Clear Stream (the James Irvine Garden). Participants take a stroll to the garden after meeting at the National Museum. The following week, participants return to the Museum to discuss/review their work. $15 National Museum Members; $25 non-members, includes Museum admission and a copy of Panich's book.

Co-sponsored by the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center. Made possible, in part, by the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles.

Screening: Cats of Mirikitani

events/2007-10-13_Cats.jpg

"Make art not war" is Jimmy Mirikitani's motto. This 85-year-old Japanese American artist was born in Sacramento and raised in Hiroshima, but by 2001 he is living on the streets of New York with the twin towers of the World Trade Center still ominously anchoring the horizon behind him. What begins as a simple verite portrait of one homeless man becomes a rare documentary of daily life in New York in the months leading up to 9/11. Discussion with the filmmaker Linda Hattendorf to follow.

A Time of Innocence

events/2007-10-20_TimeOfInnocence.jpg

Author Sanae Kawaguchi in conversation with Art Hansen
Published in Japan in 2005, A Time of Innocence tells the poignant story of Japanese-American families who escaped the West Coast during the brief period of "voluntary evacuation" and made their dangerous way into the interior to avoid confinement in the government camps. This fictional account of the families' hardships, travails, and triumphs captures an emotionally charged moment in U.S. history. Book signing to follow.

Due to circumstance beyond our control, the Paula Fuga concert scheduled for October 25 has been canceled. It will not be rescheduled.

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Paula Fuga, has been called the new face of Hawaiian music. Her reggae-inflected sound is soulful and plaintive, complex and intelligent. She'll perform songs from her all-original debut album, Lilikoi, a blend of tradition and innovation. You're sure to become an instant fan.
