All programs are free for Museum members and free with admission for non-members, unless otherwise noted. Events are subject to change.
Advanced reservations are recommended for most programs as space may be limited. When making a reservation, e-mail rsvp@janm.org or call 213.625.0414 at least 48 hours prior to the event. Include the name, date, and time of the program, as well as your name and the total in your party. Some programs may have separate reservation contacts. Please check program description.

One Book/One Glendale: A Citywide Reading Event
Designed to unify Glendale's diverse community, One Book/One Glendale hopes to foster community through the universal themes of family, injustice, and freedom explored in Julie Otsuka's historical novel, When the Emperor Was Divine. In conjunction with this citywide reading event, the National Museum presents a series of public programs that transports the stories and narratives told within the National Museum's walls to the Glendale Public Library. These programs on November 7, 8, 10, and 14 (see specific listings for program details) will be held at the Glendale Public Library, 222 East Harvard St., Glendale, CA 91205. The First Battle: The Battle for Equality in War-Time Hawaii

With war fears rising, a Council for Inter-racial Unity was organized in Honolulu in 1939 in support of Hawai`i's large Japanese ancestry community. When 120,000 people were incarcerated, a behind-the-scenes battle for justice and equality--reaching as far as the White House--set Hawai`i on a different course. Conversation with filmmaker Tom Coffman and Dr. Richard Kosaki follows screening.
Presented in collaboration with the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy and Dr. Lane Hirabayashi, George & Sakaye Aratani Professor of the Japanese American Internment, Redress and Community, Asian American Studies, UCLA.
