Target Free Family Saturday: Fold, Crease, and CrinkleEnjoy a day of family fun with origami activities, workshops, and demonstrations. Generously sponsored by Target, these special Saturdays are filled with fun activities giving families unique ways to learn, play, and grow together. He is also called the “money folder”, a practitioner of origami whose canvas is the United States One Dollar Bill. We attend and teach at various origami conventions and functions, such as the Japanese Garden in Long Beach and Van Nuys, several libraries, Japanese Festivals, County Fairs, and other events. The family food demo helps families with tips on smarter shopping, fun recipe ideas, advice on how to incorporate healthier choices when possible and advice on how to delegate tasks in an age-appropriate way. This family food demo is a “how to” get everyone involved in the family meal. Kidding Around the Kitchen is for families that have full plates in life as well as wanting a full plate of food to enjoy together. It's about time well spent. You'll see your kids get a “we did it attitude!!” This family food demo works on the try it premises all while empowering the kids and family. If we can do it, so can you!! Generously sponsored by Target, these special Saturdays are filled with fun activities giving families unique ways to learn, play, and grow together. ALL DAY CRAFT ACTIVITIES: SCHEDULE: 11 AM - Doors open 1 PM – 25 Stories: A Weaving Workshop for Kids. To celebrate the opening of our newest exhibition, American Tapestry: 25 Stories from the Collection, educator/artist Cameron Taylor-Brown will lead a weaving workshop for kids (Class is first come, first serve. Limit 15 children. She studied fiber art at the University of California, Berkley with artist Ed Rossbach and textile design at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. She worked in New York City as a stylist of upholstery and home furnishing fabrics, taught textile design at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science and worked as an exhibition curator. Since 1985, Taylor-Brown has lived in Los Angeles where she maintains a studio and is active in several arts organizations. She was a founding board member of the Textile Group of Los Angeles, is President of California Fibers, and is a board member of Designing Weavers. Her artwork is widely exhibited and has been published in American Craft, Fiberarts, Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot and the Fiberarts Design Books Four, Five, Six and Seven . She travels Southern California and Arizona as the regional representative for several top yarn companies, including Rowan, Filatura de Crosa and Manos del Uruguay. An experienced teacher and facilitator, she conducts workshops throughout the country exploring design, color, creativity and the collaborative process. Cameron Taylor-Brown is a founder of ACCESS Community Arts & Education, a consulting partnership that works with classroom teachers and artists to make direct connections between the arts, curriculum, educational content standards and community arts experiences. Two accessARTS models, Start with Art and Arts in the City , were developed with the support of California State Charter School Grants. Target Free Family Saturday: Just for Kicks!Enjoy a day of martial art activities and demonstrations. This month we are honored to partner with the internationally known Martial Arts Museum. Generously sponsored by Target, these special Saturdays are filled with fun activities giving families unique ways to learn, play, and grow together. ALL DAY CRAFT ACTIVITIES: SCHEDULE: 11 AM: Doors open 11 AM - 4 PM: A photo exhibition about the history of martial arts! Presented by the Martial Arts Museum 12 - 2 PM: Try on an inflatable sumo suit and do battle 12 - 4 PM: Come watch an exciting interactive play about the history of martial arts that includes demonstrations and a Hollywood stunt show spectacular! Presented by the Martial Arts Museum. 12:30 PM: Take a beginner’s karate workshop with Tenshin-Kai (Class is first come, first serve. Limit 25 children) 1 - 4 PM: Kidding Around the Kitchen will be helping our martial artist to chop up a rainbow of assorted veggies with a delicious homemade dip to fuel our young martial arts heroes with some kung food dippers 2:30 PM: Take a beginner Tai Chi workshop with Tenshin-Kai (Class is first come, first serve. Tenshin-Kai Grandmaster Hirakawa has an extensive knowledge of the martial arts, including dan rankings in Karate, Aikido, Judo, Iaido and weaponry. Aikido Center of Los Angeles The Aikido Center of Los Angeles is dedicated to practicing Aikido and Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido as traditional Japanese martial arts. The Dojo was established in 1974 by Reverend Kensho Furuya, Aikido 6th Dan and Iaido 6th Dan Kyoshi. Furuya Sensei was a direct student of the late Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba and trained at the Aikido World Headquarters Hombu Dojo in 1969. We are directly affiliated with the Aikido World Headquarters, Hombu Dojo Aikikai. The Dojo is also the Headquarters for the Los Angeles Sword and Swordsmanship Society, which is dedicated to the study of Japanese swords and the discipline of Japanese swordsmanship, Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido and Toyama Ryu Iaido. Yoko Fujimoto; acclaimed singer from the renowned Taiko Ensemble Kodo, Derek Nakamoto; Record Producer and Keyboardist who has worked with artist such as Michael Bolton & Keiko Matsui are joined by session drummer Denny Fongheiser; best known for his work with Tracy Chapman, Heart and T Bone Burnett for an concert presenting songs from Yoko’s repertoire with Kodo as well as songs from her CD with Derek “Morisa Komoris” in a contemporary setting. Stories will be shared about how each of our own experiences traveling the world shaped our perspectives, which influence our interpretation of music. They were inspired to write the Amy Hodgepodge series by their beautiful nieces and nephews - many of whom are mixed race children - and by the fact that when you look around the world today, it's more of a hodgepodge than ever. She was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and later moved to Honolulu, Hawai'i. She has a Masters degree in Secondary Education from NYU and a Ph.D in Educational Foundations from the University of Hawai‘i. Her doctoral research explored narrative and the politics of multicultural education. Maya has taught and developed humanities curriculum for alternative public and private schools in New York City and Honolulu. She has also mentored many teachers and conducted teacher training workshops in the U.S. and Indonesia. From 2000 to 2006, she was a lecturer in the University of Hawaii's College of Education. Maya is currently an education specialist at the East West Center which promotes cooperation and exchange between the United States and Asia. Her picture book Ladder to the Moon is being illustrated and will be published in the Fall of 2010. She is also writing a book on one of her lifelong commitments, peace education.
