Our 2012 Gala Dinner, Transforming a Forgotten Story, will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the JW Marriott Hotel at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. Seventy years ago, when President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, he provided the pretext to unlawfully uproot thousands of people of Japanese ancestry, falsely incarcerate over 120,000 and undermine the status of Japanese Americans as loyal citizens during World War II. For decades, very few spoke of the Japanese American World War II experience until it was revived by a community seeking its own true history. In the struggle to regain lost civil rights, the story has evolved to mean different things to different people especially in the post-9/11 era.

The 2012 Gala Dinner program will present how the remarkable journey of this once forgotten story—one that began with the indomitable spirit of our Issei—would become one of our most important civil rights stories both nationally and internationally. We are pleased to announce that we will pay special tribute to The Honorable Norman Y. Mineta, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation, at the Gala in recognition of his continuing fight for civil rights, including the critical leadership role that he played on and after 9/11.
