Day of RemembranceDay of Remembrance (DOR), the community’s annual commemoration of President Roosevelt’s signing of EO 9066 and the World War II exclusion and internment of Japanese Americans and Japanese Latin Americans, will be held at the Japanese American National Museum. The 2001 DOR marks the 20th Anniversary of the Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress (NCRR), formerly known as the National Coalition for Redress & Reparation. The National Museum, the Pacific Southwest District JACL, and other community organizations join with NCRR in reflecting upon the 20+ year journey for redress and justice, and the continuing efforts for a vibrant and strong community. |

Using the Culture Within and Around You: A Writing WorkshopLed by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston (Fellow 1991) and David Mura (Fellow 1986) Based on the premise that "you should write what you know," this course takes a closer look at how culture plays an integral part in inspiring writing. As a participant you will learn how culture can impact your creative process and sense of self as a writer. Designed for writers at all levels, this course offers a lifelong method for studying the craft of writing and finding inspiration in the world around you. Enhancing Your Creativity: A Writing WorkshopHave you ever had the desire to write poetry, fiction or memoirs, but don’t know where to begin? Then come to the National Museum’s writing workshop, where instructor Cecilia Manguerra Brainard will teach participants how to enhance their creativity by learning how to tap into the right-brain. Specific exercises will be given and participants will have the chance to do some writing and sharing. Brainard has been teaching creative writing since 1989, and now teaches classes at the Writers Program, UCLA Extension, and Writing for Animation at USC. She is the author and editor of ten books, including the internationally acclaimed novel, When the Rainbow Goddess Wept. In her newly released novel, MAGDALENA, Brainard explores the loves and secrets of three generations of women in the Philippines from the time of the Spanish American War, World War II, and Vietnam War. Following the workshop will be a Publication Party of MAGDALENA. |

Preserving Your Family’s History: Basic Collection’s CareLearn how to preserve your family images for generations to come. This workshop, presented by the National Museum’s Associate Collections Manager Nikki Chang and Assistant Archivist Robert Dirig, will provide helpful guidelines to improve the care of your family’s home movie collection and photographs/photo albums. Taiko drummers from several different groups in Southern California will host this workshop and jam session presenting you with the opportunity to learn about the history of taiko in North America, gain hands-on experience with different instruments, and participate in a demonstration of the creative process of a taiko jam session.
