1989 Fellow

Cindy Bernard photographs cinematic and auditory echoes in the landscape. In her Ask the Dust series, Bernard revisited locations that had become indelibly linked to cinema history. A recent body of work starts with recollections of recording devices and listening experiences now obsolete in the age of the MP3. Bernard’s long engagement with sound and location have merged in The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS), an organization that she founded and devoted to new music.

Since 1986, her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) as well as international collections. Her work is currently featured in Index: Conceptualism in California from the Permanent Collection at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and in a solo exhibition at Tracy Williams LTD in New York.
