2006 Fellow

Hilja Keading creates video installations exploring the psychology of performance and the boundaries of the self. Her work challenges constructed notions of femininity, collective identities and even, as in the work on view in this exhibition, The Bonkers Devotional, our ideas about “animal” and “human.” In her interaction with a black bear in a cabin, the tensions between fear, desire and awe are profound.

Keading has exhibited internationally, most recently at the Getty Museum’s California Video exhibition, and is currently working on a permanent video installation at the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport. A graduate of UCLA, Keading currently teaches at UC Riverside in the Department of Art.
