2001 Fellow

Kyungmi Shin creates installations that explore the notions of growth and development in both nature and culture. Her current work uses imagery and materials from both Ghana and the U.S., the two places where she spends most of her time. In the installation for this exhibition, a modified excerpt from the installation Many Waters, Shin uses two and three dimensional elements to explore the meeting of Africa and the West. War Cuts reprocesses images that have appeared constantly in newspapers since the start of the Iraq War, creating a visually dazzling image of multiplied loss.

Shin received an MFA from UC Berkeley. She has recently exhibited at UC Riverside and 18th Street Art Complex in Santa Monica, and she created a site-specific installation for Los Angeles International Airport.
