1989 Fellow

Lari Pittman is a painter whose intricately layered works incorporate the languages of advertising, decoration, graphic design and folk art—both past and present. He creates loose narratives that explore the nature of desire, romance, longing and loss. His masterful treatment of paint and his combinations of bold symbols and nuanced patterns create complex works that unfold like surreal, evocative novels that grow and change with each viewing.

Pittman has had numerous international solo exhibitions, including shows at Villa Arson, Nice; ICA, London; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva; and at his galleries in Los Angeles, New York, London and Berlin. He has both a BFA and MFA from Cal Arts, and is professor of Fine Arts at UCLA.
