2003 Fellow

Ruby Osorio paints and stitches images that explore and exploit notions of femininity. She has incorporated sewing into her past work, crafting patterns and images from thread as well as paint as in Once Revealed. Although initially one is drawn into her compositions by the delicacy and beauty of the figures and images, a sinister undercurrent complicates the sweetness at the surface. In her current work, Osorio’s compositions have become more ambitious, abstracted and focused on the play of paint on surface.

Osorio has had solo shows recently in Athens, Los Angeles, and St. Louis, and has exhibited widely in international group shows. She is a graduate of UCLA, and has participated in residencies in Idylwild, Calif., and Japan.
