Kokeshi: From Folk Art to Art Toy
July 24–October 4, 2009
In collaboration with the Los Angeles Toys, Dolls and Amusements Museum, Kokeshi: From Folk Art to Art Toy, explores the evolution of a traditional Japanese folk toy—from its humble beginnings as a toy for farmer’s children and its proliferation as a mid-19th century souvenir in Japan—to a pop culture figure that has been interpreted in multiple mediums by Western artists.
This exhibition incorporates traditional kokeshi representing the ten classic styles and the post-war “creative” kokeshi, along with displays of both kokeshi-inspired art by contemporary artists and customized kokeshi designed by prominent artists (see current artist list). The exhibition also features a special display of custom painted kokeshi by over 80 well-known international contemporary artists and designers which will be for sale through the Museum Store.
