The Sogetsu Los Angeles Branch was established in 1985 and many of the founding members are very active to this date. Mrs. Shunyo Okinaka with her quiet and gentle way helped us hold our group together. Many of her students have graduated and become strong and devoted teachers of Sogetsu School.
We have over 80 members and 40 are teachers and are very active in promoting Sogetsu and the cultural art of ikebana to our communities. We host workshops, cultural exchanges and flower shows at various community centers such as Descanso Gardens, St. Holly School, city colleges, county fairs, and garden clubs to mention a few. In October 2007, we hosted the katen “Autumn Wind” at the Japanese American National Museum which was enjoyed by over 300 friends and guests.
In March 2008, Mrs. Shunyo Okinaka received “Sogetsu Sunlight Award” given to Sogetsu teachers who are 90 years or older for their long career in teaching Sogetsu Ikebana.
Our aim is to expand our skills and knowledge of Sogetsu Ikebana and to outreach the community to spread the happiness and joy of ikebana to more people.
