Robert Wilson
The exhibition design and visual concept of Isamu Noguchi – Sculptural Design are the work of acclaimed director and designer, Robert Wilson, whom the New York Times has described as "a towering figure in the world of experimental theater." Like Noguchi, Wilson embraced an equally fluid career as a theater director, choreographer, artist, and designer. His works involve a variety of artistic media, combining movement, painting, lighting, furniture design, sculpture, music, and text into a striking yet unified whole.
Wilson studied architecture in the mid-1960s at the Pratt Institute in New York, where he became deeply interested in design and dance. His reputation was established through avant-garde works staged in New York and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s. Wilson is known for his collaborations with artists as diverse as Philip Glass, David Byrne, Susan Sontag, William S. Burroughs, Jessye Norman, and Tom Waits. His striking production of Madama Butterfly, which was performed at the Los Angeles Opera during the 2003-04 season and conducted by Kent Nagano, became one of the most talked-about artistic events of the year.
