Gina Medina-Gay

Elementary School Educator, Albuquerque Public Schools

Gina L. Medina-Gay is an elementary art teacher with the Albuquerque Public School District in New Mexico. She is an eighteen-year veteran teacher. She has been teaching grades K-5th since the inception of the Elementary Fine Arts program, which began thirteen years ago. Ms. Medina received a B.A. in Fine Arts from New Mexico Highlands University and an M.A. in Education from the University of New Mexico. Besides teaching students of various grade levels, Ms. Medina also provides teacher and parent workshops in her district for the promotion of art into student lives. Ms. Medina believes in an integrated approach in curriculum planning, whereby, the elements and principles of art are introduced and practiced, different mediums are explored, and students are given tools for self-expression in response to the visual literacy that they experience day-to-day. She believes that making connections to history and to other cultures through art brings students closer to the understanding of diversity, perspective, beauty, and peace.
