Federico Peña

Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation

Former Transportation and Energy Secretary, the Honorable Federico F. Peña, is a Managing Director of Vestar Capital Partners, a private equity investment firm he joined in 1998. Prior to joining Vestar, Peña served as U.S. Secretary of Energy (1997-1998). He developed the administration’s Comprehensive National Energy Strategy and played an important role both in the oil and gas development in the Caspian Sea region and the administration’s legislation to restructure the electric utility industry nationwide. As U.S. Secretary of Transportation (1993-1997), he helped to revitalize the U.S. airline industry here and globally. Before serving in the Cabinet, Peña was President and CEO of Peña Investment Advisors (1992-1993) and May of the City of Denver (1983-1991). Peña currently serves on the boards of Marsico Capital Management, Principal Financial Group, Sonic Corp., Valor Telecommunications, and Toyota’s U.S. Diversity Advisory Board. He is originally from Brownsville, Texas and has J.D. and B.A. degrees from the University of Texas.
