Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura

Medal of Honor Recipient

Hiroshi Hershey Miyamura’s parents came from Kumamoto, Japan and settled in Gallup, New Mexico around 1900. He was one of seven children and graduated from Gallup High School in 1943. He was drafted into the army in January 1944 and took basic training at Camp Blanding, Fla. He was assigned to “D” Company of the 100/442 RCT. He was discharged from the Army in June 1946. He then enlisted in the Army Reserve for three years. Hershey went to Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1947 and was married to Terry Tsuchimori in June 1948. He then enlisted for another three years in the Reserves in June 1949 and called to active duty in August 1950 when the Korean War started. After nine weeks of training, he was flown to Japan where he joined Co. “H1” –7th Regt. of the 3rd Division. He sailed to North Korea where he became a squad leader of a machine squad. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on the night of April 24, 1951 when he was wounded and captured on April 25th. He was repatriated on August 20, 1953. President Eisenhower presented the Medal of Honor to Hershey Miyamura on October 22, 1953. Hershey Miyamura still lives in Gallup, New Mexico. He ran a service station for twenty-five years and retired in April 1984. Hershey and Terry have two sons and a daughter, four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
