Position Summary:
The Senior Philanthropy Officer is a front line fundraising professional responsible for the management of a portfolio of 100 to 150 prospects with the minimum giving potential of $25,000 and above, with a focus on strategic multi-year major gifts of $100,000 or more. Prospect management includes qualification of new prospects, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors. Prospect relationships are developed around donor interests and the Museum’s priorities. The Senior Philanthropy Officer will develop and strengthen prospect relationships through in person visits and communications. The Senior Philanthropic Officer will participate in a broad range of events that have strategic impact on the success of the major gifts program and individual prospect relationships. In addition, the Senior Philanthropy Officer will work collaboratively with other staff members including the executive leadership team. This position reports to the Chief Development Officer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of major gifts prospects with a giving capacity of $25,000 or more. Responsibilities include qualification of identified prospects to build portfolio, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors.
- In conjunction with the Chief Development Officer, establish prospect management goals for donor contact including visits, calls, and email. Travel regularly to develop and strengthen relationships.
- Cultivate, solicit, and close major gifts.
- Develop strategy, prepare proposals and materials, including written documentation for accurate gift recording and use for acknowledgement and reporting.
- Work with museum staff, including executive leaders, to develop meaningful engagement opportunities for major gift prospects, including the Annual Benefit and the Comprehensive Campaign.
- Maintain active management strategies for all prospects and ensure thorough and accurate recording of reports on all visits and other prospect activities.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to improve performance of duties and responsibilities and gain greater familiarity with donor options and planned giving.
- Staff members must be able to work with visitors of all ages to support the various events sponsored by JANM. Each staff member will be expected to work on a minimum of three museum-wide events per year:
- JANM’s Benefit and Online Auction—(off-site) typically held in the Spring (April-May)
- Oshogatsu Family Festival (January)
- Natsumatsuri Family Festival (August)

Bachelor’s degree preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least 5 years of Fundraising experience working with gifts of $25,000 and more. Willingness to learn and apply new skills. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented. Strong proofreading skills. Professional phone manner is essential. Ability to work in a fast paced team-environment, be a self-starter. Demonstrated commitment and flexibility in order to ensure a high level of quality service. Ability to adjust and provide appropriate action when unanticipated need arises. Knowledge of Japanese American/Asian American history and culture a preferred. Requires occasional evening and weekend hours supporting development department and special event functions.
Has excellent communication and negotiation skills. Must be able to provide courteous and effective service to co-workers, volunteers, and the general public. Is able to read, write, and comprehend routine reports and correspondence, including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Is able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group format and large group format.
Is computer literate, Internet savvy, and experienced with MS Office, Altru or similar CRM database, and Google Suite preferred. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Ability to act on own initiative, making consistently sound decisions. Must be able to comply with institutional policies and procedures. Perform successfully when juggling and re-prioritizing multiple assignments in a fast-paced, changing work environment. Is able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Reliable follow-through on assigned projects in a complete, well conceived, and timely manner.

The Senior Philanthropy Officer position is a regular, full-time position.
