Position Summary:
The 2023 Getty Marrow Undergraduate Exhibitions and Audience Engagement (EAE) Intern will work closely with the Vice President of Exhibitions and Art Director and will focus on supporting the upcoming revision of our core exhibition, Being and Becoming (working title). The Japanese American National Museum is reimagining the permanent exhibition that introduces visitors to the 150 years of the Japanese American experience. Using artifacts, graphics, text, video, audio, and interactive displays, both in-person and online, the exhibition will make relevant the many intersections the Japanese American experience has to similar experiences of other immigrant communities. The exhibition will encourage visitors to explore the ever evolving and multi-racial American story.
The EAE intern will work with the VP of Exhibitions and Art Director to develop and test a number of exhibition concepts and hands-on interactives that will be central to the interpretation of this exhibition that is being designed by Ralph Appelbaum and Associates. The EAE intern will assist with the intro to the new exhibition by researching and developing an orientation to the overall audience engagement and visitor outcomes.
Dates of Internship: Dates of Internship: 10 consecutive weeks, in-person, June 13 to August 19, 2023. Full-Time (40 hours a week). Requires some evening and weekend hours. The Exhibitions & Audience Engagement Intern will work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule.
Intern Stipend: $6,800 gross stipend for Full-Time (40 hours/week), 10 consecutive weeks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Weekly Work Timeline—Exhibitions and Audience Engagement
The Intern will receive hands-on training from the Art Director, Graphic Designer, and volunteer trainers. In addition, the museum’s volunteer docents will introduce the Intern to the history and work culture of JANM as well as the history of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Training and assigned work will progress over 10 consecutive weeks, culminating in the presentation of completed work to project staff during the final week. The Intern’s work-space will be in the Exhibitions/Production area. They will also work outside of the office on various aspects of the production projects.
Week 1—Orientation and Training
- Human resources orientation.
- Orientation to the Japanese American National Museum.
- Overview of the history of the institution.
- Overview of the main themes that relate to Nikkei history in the United States.
- Familiarize self with facility and staff and general operations of Exhibitions and Collections and Management Access.
- Review Project “Being and Becoming”
- Introduction to JANM’s production procedures
Week 2
- Check in with the VP of Exhibitions to discuss progress, needs, and challenges.
- Attend Design Development meetings with RAA and project team.
- Assess current educational materials and articulate forms and concepts.
- Meet with Education staff to determine products and outcomes.
- Assist with graphics work.
Week 3
- Check in with the VP of Exhibitions to discuss progress, needs, and challenges.
- Attend Design Development meetings with RAA and project team.
- Review exhibition script and assess collection items for use in activities.
- Begin to develop concepts for audience engagement within the exhibition.
- Assist with graphics work.
Week 4
- Check in with the VP of Exhibitions to discuss progress, needs, and challenges.
- Attend Design Development meetings with RAA and project team.
- Continue to develop concepts for audience engagement within the exhibition.
- Create mock-up of activities for testing and review.
- Assist with graphics work.
Week 5
- Check in with the VP of Exhibitions to discuss progress, needs, and challenges.
- Attend Design Development meetings with RAA and project team.
- Test mock-up of activities with project team and Education staff for comment and review.
- Assist with graphics work.
Week 6
- Check in with the VP of Exhibitions to discuss progress, needs, and challenges.
- Attend Design Development meetings with RAA and project team.
- Continue to refine concepts for audience engagement within the exhibition.
- Develop designs and working drawings of activities for review.
- Assist with graphics work.
Week 7
- Check in with the VP of Exhibitions to discuss progress, needs, and challenges.
- Attend Design Development meetings with RAA and project team.
- Continue to develop designs and working drawings of activities for review.
- Create finished mockups for testing and review.
- Assist with graphics work.
Week 8
- Check in with the VP of Exhibitions to discuss progress, needs, and challenges.
- Attend Design Development meetings with RAA and project team.
- Finish designs and working drawings of activities for review.
- Present finished mockups for testing and review.
- Assist with graphics work.
Week 9
- Check in with the VP of Exhibitions to discuss progress, needs, and challenges.
- Attend Design Development meetings with RAA and project team.
- Package finished designs and working drawings of activities as well as finished mockups.
- Turn in package to RAA and project team.
- Assist with graphics work.
- Write report on internship for the Getty.
Week 10
- Check in with the VP of Exhibitions to discuss progress, needs, and challenges.
- Attend Design Development meetings with RAA and project team.
- Finish any loose ends on the assigned projects.

Criteria for Intern Candidates:
The internship opportunities are intended for students from backgrounds underrepresented in museums and the visual arts professions. Applicants must be of a group underrepresented in museums and visual arts organizations, including, but not limited to individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander descent.
In addition, each intern must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Currently enrolled full-time undergraduate (bachelor’s or associate degree program) and have completed at least one semester or 2 quarters of college by June 2023. Students who graduated the semester or quarter immediately before the internship begins are also eligible;
- and must be a resident or attend college in Los Angeles County;
- and must be a US citizen or permanent resident eligible to be legally employed in the US. Students with DACA status valid through the internship period are also eligible.
Please note that students who have previously served as Getty Marrow Undergraduate Interns at the Japanese American National Museum are not eligible for consideration. Students enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible. Finally, staff members and relatives of staff or board members are not eligible.
Selected Intern is required to be up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations with bivalent booster (Fall 2022) dose.
Currently enrolled undergraduate student.
Strong research and written communication skills are essential. Strong attention to detail and highly organized. Strong design skills in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). Experience with graphic design and typography. Experience with gallery installations, Slitter/Cutter/Creasers, and Digital Printing Press desired but not required. Interest in learning about working as an arts professional in a nonprofit.
Has excellent communication and negotiation skills. Must be able to provide courteous and effective service to co-workers, volunteers, and the general public. Is able to read, write, and comprehend routine reports and correspondence, including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Is able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group format and large group format.
Computer literate, Internet savvy, and experienced with MS Office, Google Calendar and Gmail preferred. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
Strong design skills in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). Experience with graphic design and typography.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Ability to act on own initiative, making consistently sound decisions. Must be able to comply with institutional policies and procedures. Perform successfully when juggling and re-prioritizing multiple assignments in a fast-paced, changing work environment. Is able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Reliable follow-through on assigned projects in a complete, well conceived and timely manner.
