Hello Kitty Shibori (Japanese Cloth Dyeing)

After a brief talk on the connection between Sanrio and Japan’s silk industry, Shibori Girl (Glennis Dolce) will lead participants in a one-day workshop designing and dyeing a stitched shibori piece on vintage silk kimono lining fabric.

$36 members, $45 non-members, plus $20 materials fee due to instructor at beginning of class (cash only). Museum admission included. Bring rubber gloves, sewing pins, and scissors. Limited to 20 participants.

Chrissa Sparkles is a host and online personality who loves all things cute. Her “Chrissa Sparkles” YouTube Channel teaches people how to make life a little bit cuter, with a touch of sparkle. As a Hello Kitty ambassador for Sanrio, Chrissa lent her talents to the recent Hello Kitty Con as a panel moderator and tea party host. She has appeared on NHK World TV’s Kawaii International, been featured in Cosmopolitan magazine, and hosted MNET America’s Hello Pop!

    PANELIST BIOS

    Christine Yano, PhD
    Christine Yano is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Hawaii and co-curator of Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty. She has an MA in Musicology (Ethnomusicology) and Anthropology and a PhD in Anthropology, both from the University of Hawaii. Yano is the author of Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty’s Trek Across the Pacific; Airborne Dreams: “Nisei” Stewardesses and Pan American World Airways; Crowning the Nice Girl: Gender, Ethnicity, and Culture in Hawai‘i’s Cherry Blossom Festival; and Tears of Longing: Nostalgia and the Nation in Japanese Popular Song. During academic year 2014–15, she is Visiting Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University.

    Laura Miller
    Laura Miller is Ei’ichi Shibusawa-Seigo Arai Endowed Professor of Japanese Studies and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. She received her PhD in Linguistic Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1988. The author of Beauty Up: Exploring Contemporary Japanese Body Aesthetics and co-editor of three other books, Miller has published widely on Japanese culture and language, on topics that include English loanwords in Japanese, the beauty industry, girls’ slang, self-photography, elevator girls, tarot cards, divination, and the ancient Japanese monarch Himiko. She teaches courses on Japan and linguistic anthropology and works to promote Japan Studies through a variety of campus and community programming.

    Jaime Scholnick
    Jaime Scholnick is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work deals with gender, power, consumerism, and global domination. She has shown internationally at such venues as MOMA P.S. 1, the Torrance Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson. During a period of living in Japan, Scholnick began a series of multimedia artworks titled Hello Kitty Gets a Mouth. An eponymous short film from the series has been featured at film festivals throughout the United States. Scholnick earned her MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 1991 and is represented by CB1 Gallery in Los Angeles.

    Denise Uyehara
    Denise Uyehara is an award-winning performance artist, writer, and playwright whose work has been presented throughout the United States and in London, Vancouver, Helsinki, and Tokyo. For over two decades she used interdisciplinary performance to investigate what marks us in our migrations across borders of identity. She is a recent recipient of grants and awards from the MAP Fund, the National Performance Network Creation Fund, and the Asian Cultural Council. A founding member of the Sacred Naked Nature Girls, she conducts workshops for a wide range of communities—artists, LGBTQ, women, people of color—and is a frequent lecturer at colleges and universities.

    Artists Paul Frank, Simone Legno, and Brandi Milne, whose work is featured in the contemporary art portion of Hello! The Supercute World of Hello Kitty, will participate in a discussion about their work and how Hello Kitty served as inspiration.

    ARTIST BIOS

    Paul Frank
    Paul Frank is an internationally known artist whose bold, satirical designs for clothing and accessories have appeared in magazines, television shows, commercials, music videos, and motion pictures. Frank also creates fine art, which he describes as his character designs brought to life in soft sculptural form through sewing, carving, woodworking, and screen printing.

    Simone Legno
    Simone Legno is the creative director and co-founder of tokidoki, an innovative line of apparel, handbags, cosmetics, and accessories. Tokidoki, which means “sometimes” in Japanese, has a worldwide following and has collaborated with numerous brands including LeSportsac, Marvel, Levi’s, Smashbox cosmetics, and Xbox. Legno describes his brand’s philosophy as “the hope that something magical will happen to us.”

    Brandi Milne
    Brandi Milne’s rustic, melancholy scenarios recall classic European Gothic paintings while simultaneously expressing deeply personal narratives of growth and struggle.

    ALL DAY ACTIVITIES:

  • Create your own biodegradable planter, and then plant a seed and take it home to watch it grow. Special Hello Kitty seed labels will be provided to remind you what you planted.

  • Ruthie’s Origami Corner: Inspired by Sanrio’s “small gift, big smile” philosophy, JANM volunteer Ruthie Kitagawa will teach you how to make a small gift box out of recycled gift wrap.

  • Design and make your own eco-friendly fashion and accessories using recycled materials. At 3:30 p.m., you’ll have a chance to show off your creations at JANM’s own red carpet runway fashion show!

  • Macaroni Kids Downtown LA will have a bracelet- and necklace-making table where guests can create macaroni-based accessories to go with their other eco-friendly fashions.
  •  

    SCHEDULED ACTIVITIES:

    11:30 a.m. • 12:30 p.m.: Los Angeles–based nonprofit organization reDiscover Center will lead a workshop about the environmental dangers of plastic waste and the importance of recycling plastic wherever possible. There will also be a craft activity to create a fish art piece from a used CD.

    12 p.m. • 2 p.m.: Join in on a rockin’ drum circle with Drumtime! All instruments provided, along with brief drumming lessons. Fun for ages 1 to 101!

    1 p.m.–2 p.m.: Versatile magician Johnny Wu uses everyday objects to perform innovative and interactive magic tricks. Watch his act and prepare to be surprised and delighted.

    3:30 p.m.: Check out the eco-friendly fashions that Target Free Family Saturday attendees have created at our own red carpet fashion show.

    A Conversation with Yuko Yamaguchi

    Yuko Yamaguchi, who has been Hello Kitty’s head designer since 1980, will discuss her work with the global icon. Yamaguchi is the most influential figure in Hello Kitty’s world and has guided her visual evolution. Credited with integrating contemporary fashion trends into her aesthetic, she has been quoted as saying, “What she does, I do, and what I do, Hello Kitty does.”

    Yamaguchi will sign copies of the Hello! exhibition catalog following the program. $16 members, $20 non-members.

    Same-day admission to Common Ground and Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty are included.

    RULES FOR PROGRAM:
    -One copy of the exhibition catalog can be signed per ticketed guest
    -No substitutions (i.e. Yuko cannot sign other books, posters or products)
    -Each autograph will be personalized with the recipient's name. Autographs without personalization cannot be given.
    -No personal photographs with Yuko will be allowed, although photographs of Yuko may be taken while in line.
    -No flash photography
    -No videos
    -No re-entry after leaving the building where the program is held.

    Hello Kitty Crochet Workshop

    Learn the art of amigurumi (miniature toy crochet) and make your own Hello Kitty-inspired charm to decorate your keychain, zipper pull, or purse. Instructor Cheryl Cambras will cover chain stitch, single crochet in the round, and increase/decrease crochet techniques.

    For all skill levels. Recommended for ages 14 and up. Class includes a one-hour break to view Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty.

    Cheryl Cambras is an artist who creates textile works, abstract paintings, and unique knitwear items. Based in Los Angeles, Cambras has shown her work at Royal/T Gallery, Arena 1, and The Hive. She created an art installation of 102 crocheted birds at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

    6 p.m.–8 p.m.: Hello Kitty Cafe Truck will be giving out Hello Kitty bottled water and a donut (one per guest, while supplies last).

    8:30 p.m.: Nylon Pink performance

    8:30 p.m.–10 p.m.: Hello Kitty crafts—coloring pages, paper dolls, temporary tattoos

    Join us as we say farewell to Hello Kitty, whose exhibition closes on May 31. Our festive closing party will feature catalog signings with exhibiting artists, a performance by Nylon Pink, music by DJ Shy, photo opportunities with Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty crafts, the Hello Kitty Café truck, and complimentary appetizers and drinks courtesy of Joto Sake and Chado Tea Room. Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty will be open for viewing until 10 p.m.

    *Artists will only sign Hello! catalog and exhibition prints. 1 catalog and 1 of each print per person.

    $10 members, $30 general. JANM members get early access to the closing party starting at 6 p.m.

    InSight: LAB Writers Group Presents: Why No Mouth?

    This group of Asian American theater writers led by traci kato-kiriyama presents Why No Mouth?, a reading and discussion of Hello Kitty–inspired writings produced in their monthly workshop. The works are geared toward theater and look at themes of consumerism, relationships, and need.

    Members of the group, who experiment with writing in live time and through an Asian-American lens, have included Greg Watanabe, Jason Fong, Judy Soohoo, Ken Narasaki, Prince Gomolvilas, Snehal Desai, Vasanti Saxena, and West Liang.
