Self-Help Graphics & Art and the National Museum celebrates La Familia with a day of cultural activities for the entire family.

 

12:00-2:30 PM - The finding family stories Festival begins at the Japanese American National Museum. Share family stories through art. Hands-on art workshops with artists Dominique Moody and Patrick "Pato" Hebert. Special tours of the finding family stories exhibition, storytelling, and much more! (Plaza)

12:00-2:30 PM - STORYBOXES, Artist Instructor: Dominique Moody (Nerio Education Center)

12:30-1:15 PMA Slice of Rice, Frijoles, & Greens, a performance presented by Great Leap (Aratani Central Hall)

1:00-1:30 PMFinding Family Stories Exhibition Tours (meet at the lobby)

1:15-2:30 PM - Strolling Mariachi throughout National Museum, Trio Estrella

1:30-2:00 PM - Storytelling with Traci Kato-Kiriyama (Weingart Foundation Gallery)

2:00-4:30 PM - The finding family stories Festival continues at Self-Help Graphics. Learn about the art of printmaking during hands-on workshops where participants will make family scrapbooks and other keepsake treasures. A special print demonstration by artist Jose B. Ramirez at 2:30 pm. Meet and support Los Angeles' most recognized Latino craft artists while savoring an array of ethnic delicacies from East L.A. A traditional Mexican pinata-breaking ceremony will be one of the highlights of the afternoon. In addition, a special selection of Self-Help Graphics' most recognized print artwork will be for sale during the festival. For more information, please call 323.881.6444.

A round-trip bus shuttle will be in operation between the Japanese American National Museum and Self-Help Graphics between 2:00-4:30 pm.

The family festival also takes place at our partner Self-Help Graphics with the following activities:

1:00-4:00 PM - Community Art Workshops outside Print-Making Workshop Create a work of art with this primitive printing technique that is colorful, easy and lots of fun!

Scrapbook - Make your very own family scrapbook with faux tree-bark binders that can be painted and decorated.

Kids Variety - Youngsters are able to paint, color, and decorate pre-printed images on cardboard stock.

Connect the Dots inspired by the artwork of Teresa Hagiya - You too can connect the dots to reveal fun and funky images.

Create Your Own Mural Draw - Color or paint your own mini-mural on a mini-image of the Self-Help Graphics' building. Fill in the space provided in this workshop inspired by the work of Sandra de la Loza.

1:00-5:00 PMCraft Sale, Meet some of Los Angeles' most recognized Latino artisans as they sell their hand-made crafts at affordable prices.
