“Invisible Nation” Film Screening

Join the Democracy Center, Los Angeles County Bar Association’s International Law Section, and the California Lawyers Association’s International Law and Immigration Section for a screening of the documentary, Invisible Nation.

Invisible Nation explores Taiwan’s emergence as a beacon for democracy in Asia amidst a struggle for international recognition and geopolitical risks that threaten its existence. The documentary includes perspectives from an array of government officials, academics, and activists, including the island’s first female president, Tsai Ing-wen.

Following the screening, join a lively discussion with director Vanessa Hope and composer Wei-San Hsu about the film and what lessons can be drawn about democracy and rule of law.

Vanessa Hope

Vanessa Hope

Vanessa Hope is an award-winning producer and director who has produced multiple acclaimed films in China and made her directorial feature debut with the documentary All Eyes and Ears, an exploration of the complex links between the US and China featuring former President Obama’s US Ambassador to China. Vanessa and her husband, Ted Hope, share a company, Double Hope Films. 

Wei San Hsu

Wei-San Hsu

Wei-San Hsu is a Los Angeles–based composer from Taipei, Taiwan. She has scored films and animations that have gained recognition at Berlinale, Tribeca, IDFA, and Hot Docs. Her score for Invisible Nation received an SCL Award nomination from the Society of Composers and Lyricists. Her work also spans commercials for clients such as BMW and Disney, alongside original music created for installations featured in museum and exhibition spaces.

The Democracy Center explores the rights, freedoms, and fragility of democracy, helping to build bridges, and find common ground between people of diverse backgrounds and opinions.
