Giant Robot and Eric Nakamura

Giant Robot began in 1994 as a photocopied and staple and folded, digest sized zine founded by Eric Nakamura. Over the next few years, the zine expanded into a full sized publication joined by co-editor by Martin Wong, and gained footing in newsstands, indie shops, and big chain stores. Article topics ranged from cutting edge Hong Kong films, Japanese punk rock, to cool Asian American indie creators. The once local readership grew to a diverse nationwide audience. Press coverage came from the largest outlets in the nation including The NY Times, Wired, and LA Weekly.

In 2001, Nakamura opened its first retail store aptly named, “Giant Robot Store” in the Sawtelle Japantown neighborhood of Los Angeles, and in 2003, he opened an art gallery on the same block called “GR2.” Additional retail outlets soon followed in Silverlake (2005-2010), San Francisco (2003-2010), New York City (2005-2010), and a small restaurant called gr/eats (2005-2011). During this time, the publication grew into a six issue a year, full color magazine. Giant Robot Magazine’s influence grew worldwide and became a cornerstone of Art and Asian and Asian American popular culture. Giant Robot ceased publication in 2010 after 68 issues.

Today Giant Robot store and GR2 Gallery continues to serve the community on a daily basis. Over the span of nearly two decades, Giant Robot 2 Gallery has hosted over 300 exhibitions and Nakamura curated multiple projects at the Japanese American National Museum, “SuperAwesome” at the Oakland Museum of California, and “Contempo” at the Honolulu Museum of Art. www.giantrobot.com

Martin Wong

After graduating from UCLA and contributing to zines like Fear of Grownups, Flipside, and Dirt, Martin Wong co-founded Giant Robot with his friend Eric Nakamura. The punk zine about Asian, Asian American, and new hybrid culture became a glossy magazine with a loyal readership around the world, and Martin edited all 68 issues from 1994 to 2010. In 2018, Martin and his wife Wendy Lau (who was Giant Robot's graphic designer beginning with issue 18) started the Save Music in Chinatown series of all-ages punk rock benefit shows, where their daughter and nieces and friend would eventually play as The Linda Lindas. Martin still makes and contributes to zines, including Razorcake, to this day.
