Editors please note: JANM’s Pavilion is closed for renovation; programs will continue on the JANM campus and at other locations at janm.org/OnTheGo.
LOS ANGELES, CA – The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) mourns the passing of Marsha Aizumi. She was a beloved community leader, advocate, and founder of Okaeri, a program of the Little Tokyo Service Center. Okaeri means “welcome home” in Japanese and the program of the same name supports, empowers, and celebrates LGBTQ+ Nikkei and their families.
“JANM is deeply saddened by the loss of Marsha Aizumi. She was the force behind Okaeri, which creates valuable and treasured spaces for visibility and sharing stories, provides culturally rooted education and advocacy, and builds compassionate community connections. Her legacy of connection and inclusivity will continue to inspire future generations,” said Ann Burroughs, JANM President and CEO.
