About the Event

Join exhibition curator Dennis Reed and special guest, J. Paul Getty Museum curator Virginia Heckert, for a walkthrough of JANM’s exhibition, J. T. Sata: Immigrant Modernist. The exhibition comprises sixty photographs by J. T. Sata, photographs of Sata’s concentration camp paintings and drawings, and family artifacts from camp. Reed will talk about Sata’s photography and legacy as well as the process of curating the exhibition. Heckert will share her reflections on Sata’s work, bringing in her expertise in modernist photography in Europe and the US.

Dennis Reed

Dennis Reed

Dennis Reed is a curator, collector, artist, and writer who is best known for rediscovering Japanese American art photographers whose works were lost in the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. He has curated over 50 exhibitions for such institutions as the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Huntington, the Corcoran Gallery, and JANM. Among his publications are Pictorialism in California: Photography, 1900-1940, Japanese Photography in America, 1920-1940, and Making Waves: Japanese American Photography, 1920-1940. He is the retired Dean of Arts at Los Angeles Valley College and the former chair of the Photographic Arts Council at LACMA.

Virginia Heckert

Dr. Virginia Heckert has been a curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum since 2005, where she also served as department head (2014–2018). She organized exhibitions on Bernd and Hilla Becher, Mario Giacomelli, Irving Penn, Ed Ruscha, and August Sander and collaborated on presentations about photographs of Lyonel Feininger and the Bauhaus and Ray K. Metzker and the Institute of Design. Light, Paper, Process: Reinventing Photography and Cut! Paper Play in Contemporary Photography addressed the materiality of contemporary approaches to photography. She received her PhD from Columbia University with a dissertation on the German modernist photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch.
