LOS ANGELES, CA – The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) will host three literary events in winter and spring 2026. In February, JANM Book Club presents The Poet and the Silk Girl with author Satsuki Ina and graphic novelist Adrian Tomine. In March, JANM Book Club presents Crown City with author Naomi Hirahara. In May, JANM presents the second annual Nikkei Children's Book Festival. All events will be at the Daniel K. Inouye National Center for the Preservation of Democracy at JANM and tickets will be available on janm.org/events.

On Saturday, February 7, JANM Book Club presents The Poet and the Silk Girl author Satsuki Ina and graphic novelist Adrian Tomine from 2 p.m.–3:30 p.m. Using Ina’s compelling memoir as a guide, they will discuss the intergenerational impact of the Japanese American World War II incarceration experience and the power of art and family to foster understanding, healing, community, and societal change. General admission tickets are $5 (free for JANM Members).

On Saturday, March 21, the JANM Book Club presents Crown City with Naomi Hirahara from 2 p.m.–3:30 p.m. Hirahara’s new mystery dives into the story of two Japanese American men investigating an art theft and their discovery of something much more sinister in early twentieth century Pasadena, California. General admission tickets will be $5 (free for JANM Members).

On Saturday, May 9, JANM presents the 2026 Nikkei Children’s Book Festival from 9:30 a.m.– 3 p.m. The festival celebrates children’s literature across the diverse Japanese American community and will include author storytimes, Q&As, and activities for all ages. General admission tickets will be $10 (free for JANM Members).

About the Japanese American National Museum (JANM)

Established in 1985, JANM promotes understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. Located in the historic Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles, JANM is a center for civil rights, ensuring that the hard-fought lessons of the World War II incarceration are not forgotten. A Smithsonian Affiliate and one of America’s Cultural Treasures, JANM is a hybrid institution that straddles traditional museum categories. JANM is a center for the arts as well as history. It provides a voice for Japanese Americans and a forum that enables all people to explore their own heritage and culture. Since opening to the public in 1992, JANM has presented over one hundred exhibitions onsite while traveling forty exhibits to venues such as the Smithsonian Institution and the Ellis Island Museum in the United States, and to several leading cultural museums in Japan and South America. JANM’s Pavilion is closed for renovation; programs will continue on the JANM campus, throughout Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Southern California, and beyond from early January 2025 through late 2026.
