Behind the Scenes with The Lion King’s Mike Surrey

Mike Surrey, an illustrator for Disney’s tremendously popular movies The Lion King and Tarzan, gives you an insider’s look into the fascinating world of animation. You’ll see some original sketches from his movies and watch him demonstrate his art. Surrey will teach you how to create your own mini-movie through a take-home flipbook.

Try your hand at making a comic book! Jorge Molina, illustrator of Hurly and the Bone will show you how to create your own special illustrations. Plus, you’ll learn how to apply your new illustration skills to toy design.

Does your child read through the Sunday comics? Rafael Navarro from Self-Help Graphics explains how and why comic strips can help to improve reading skills and literacy in kids.

Parents and kids partner to create unique tales using pictures from Caldecott Award-winning author/illustrator Allen Say’s children’s books.

Following this workshop, take a moment to view the first retrospective exhibition of Say’s artwork in the Japanese American National Museum’s Hirasaki Theater Gallery.
